Heathrow has four working terminals. Terminal 1 closed permanently in 2015, and the remaining four are spread further apart than most passengers expect. Getting the terminal right matters, so here's what to know for each one.

Terminal 2 (the Queen's Terminal) handles Star Alliance airlines including Lufthansa, United, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada. Your driver will meet you at the terminal's short-stay pickup area, or inside arrivals for meet & greet bookings.

Terminal 3 is home to Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, American Airlines, Delta and most other long-haul carriers outside the main alliances. It sits close to Terminal 2, sharing the same general pickup zone.

Terminal 4 serves SkyTeam airlines and several Gulf carriers, including Air France, KLM, Qatar Airways and Etihad. It's on the southern side of the airport, a genuine drive away from Terminals 2, 3 and 5, which is worth knowing if you're being met by someone who assumes "Heathrow" means one building.

Terminal 5 is the exclusive home of British Airways. It has its own pickup area, and if you're flying BA, your driver will already know to head straight there rather than the central terminal zone.

• Heathrow to Central London: roughly 15 to 20 miles, typically 45 to 75 minutes by road depending on traffic and your exact destination (Paddington, Victoria, the West End, the City).

• Heathrow to Canary Wharf: around 20 miles, usually 50 to 70 minutes; a route where a direct transfer genuinely beats the train-plus-DLR alternative if you're carrying luggage.

• Heathrow to Windsor: one of the shortest and most popular routes we run, around 10 miles and typically 20 to 25 minutes, ideal for visitors heading straight to Windsor Castle or a Berkshire hotel.

• Heathrow to Reading: around 25 miles, roughly 35 to 45 minutes, a common route for business travellers and Thames Valley commuters.

• Heathrow to Oxford: around 45 to 50 miles, typically 70 to 90 minutes depending on the M40/A40 traffic, popular with students, academic visitors and tourists.

• Heathrow to Southampton Cruise Port: around 65 to 70 miles, usually 75 to 95 minutes, timed to your embarkation window so you're not cutting it fine on sailing day.

• Heathrow to Dover Cruise Port: around 100 miles, typically 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the M25, a route worth booking well ahead of a ferry or cruise departure.

• London to Heathrow: the reverse of the Central London route, priced and timed the same way for your outbound journey.

Heathrow has genuinely good public transport. The Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express both reach Paddington quickly, and the Piccadilly line is the cheapest way into London by a distance. So it's a fair question: why pay for a private transfer at all?

Speed to a station isn't speed to your door: The Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express get you to Paddington fast, but from there you're on the Tube, in a cab, or walking with your bags to wherever you're actually staying. A private transfer is one journey, door to door, with no changes, no stairs, and no dragging a suitcase through a ticket barrier.

Traffic on the road is predictable; delays on the network aren't: A car in traffic is still moving. A cancelled train or a line closure at 11pm isn't, and Heathrow's rail options thin out late at night in a way a booked driver simply doesn't.

Groups and luggage change the maths: For one person with hand luggage, the Tube is genuinely the cheapest option and we won't pretend otherwise. For two or more people, or anyone with hold luggage, a private transfer very quickly becomes comparable in cost per person, and far more comfortable.

Families and business travellers have different priorities than price alone: A parent managing kids, a buggy and cases doesn't want three changes and a platform sprint. A business traveller landing before a meeting doesn't want to arrive creased, delayed or unsure which exit to take. Both are exactly what a private transfer is for.

Flight delays are handled, not punished: If your flight lands late, a train timetable doesn't care, but your driver does. We track your flight and adjust automatically, at no extra charge.

As soon as we track your flight landing, your driver already knows and starts timing their arrival to you, not the other way round. Once you're through baggage reclaim, your driver helps with your bags and walks you straight to the vehicle. No wandering a car park looking for a licence plate, and no phone calls trying to describe where you're standing.

It's particularly worth choosing if you're travelling alone in an unfamiliar airport, arriving with young children, managing heavy or awkward luggage, or simply landing after a long-haul flight and wanting the easiest possible last leg of the journey.

Every Heathrow pickup we run is tracked against your actual flight, not your scheduled time. If your flight lands early, your driver is ready early. If it's delayed, whether by weather, air traffic control, or anything else outside your control, your driver's arrival shifts with it automatically, at no extra cost to you.

This matters more at Heathrow than almost anywhere else in the UK, simply because of scale. With hundreds of arrivals a day across four terminals, "just wait outside" isn't a realistic plan, and knowing your driver is watching the same flight board you'd check yourself is one less thing to worry about mid-flight.
